Mike Fields on Kentucky high school sports

  • ABOUT ME

My high school baseball coach once told me I ran like I had a piano on my back. I took that career advice and became a sportswriter. I’ve been at it for more than 30 years now, the last 28 with the Herald-Leader. I’ve covered more than 2,000 high school basketball games and 500 football games, numbers that should earn me a padded seat on press row. This truly is my old Kentucky home. I was born in Pikeville, raised in Bardstown (where legendary football coach Garnis Martin taught me driver’s ed), and educated at UK (when Dan Issel had the Cats No. 1). Life’s been a ball.

Lewis smashes Couch’s pass yardage record

Clay County senior quarterback Zach Lewis shattered Tim Couch’s state record for career passing yardage Friday night in a 39-25 victory over Perry County Central.

Lewis needed 70 yards to eclipse Couch’s record of 12,167 yards. He got that and plenty more. Lewis finished the night completing 21 of 29 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns. That pushed his career total to 12,489 yards.

With four regular season games left, Lewis looks like a cinch to break the 13,000-yard mark.

Couch’s state record for career TD passes (133) could also be in jeopardy. South Laurel QB Ricky Bowling threw for three TDs in limited action in a lopsided win over Lincoln County Friday night. That gives Bowling 121 TD passes in his career.

Russell kicker Jason Dolly set a state record Friday night by kicking his 74th and 75th consecutive extra points in a 34-0 win over Lewis County. Dolly broke the record of 73 PATs in a row set by Lexington Catholic’s Tripp Eckerline in 2002. Dolly misfired on an extra point in the third quarter to end his streak.

Pikeville RB Daniel Harmon ran wild in a 62-0 wipeout of South Floyd. Harmon rushed for 350 yards and a school-record 7 TDs . . . Defending 2A state champ Fort Campbell rang up its state-best 20th victory in a row by blanking Hancock County 42-0.
